Alabama

The Noble South (Mobile, AL)

Hey.  Let’s start off with a fun-fact.  Did you know that Mardi Gras actually started in Mobile, Alabama and NOT in New Orleans?  I know when we think of Mardi Gras, we think of New Orleans and maybe Mississippi, but contrary to what you’ve been told it actually started in Mobile.  The restaurant is located downtown in the heart of Mobile, where the attractions of Battleship USS Alabama and Mobile Carnival Museum are just a name a few.  This was my first time in Mobile and the sights going into the city are like no other.  Huge boats, huge buildings, and sunny skies gave me the most perfect view coming into the city.  Mobile, Alabama is just a two hour drive outside of New Orleans, LA so if you’re in New Orleans for whatever reason, this drive is totally worth it.

I decided to go to this restaurant because they have an amazing menu selection, but the time I went they only offered lunch.  (Insert the biggest sad face)  Everything works out the way it’s supposed to, right?  I ended up having an amazing lunch with dishes that were packed with flavors as well as a dish that I would’ve never thought of putting together.  The interior of the restaurant is beautiful, with huge windows and has a modern feel.  I was able to order two entrees for lunch along with a corn bread that was mouth watering.  Let’s start off with one of the most unique corn bread’s I’ve ever tasted in my life.  Have you ever had cracklin?  If not, it’s a fried piece of pork fat with a small amount of attached skin.  Now, imagine having it inside of corn bread!  Now, let’s take it a step further.  Imagine having the corn bread topped with collard green butter!  This was the best corn bread I’ve tasted in my life and it was so unique that I’m sure I couldn’t find it if I tried my hardest to find it.  The corn bread was soft, hot, and sweet.  The collard green butter added a very different taste to this dish as well.  The butter was a little bitter but sweet at the same time, and the cracklin inside of the corn bread was a little chewy.  The taste was very unusual, but interestingly I loved it.  If you’ve never had cracklin cornbread, then please order this when you decide to go to this restaurant.

The next dish that was ordered was the Fried Catfish, mac and cheese, and butter beans.  The catfish was fresh, crispy, and seasoned perfectly.  They provide you with a huge piece that could be passed off for a dinner portion, but I love catfish so I felt as though I was in heaven.  The macaroni and cheese was cheesy, creamy, and had a nice texture to it.  I’m a huge fan of macaroni and cheese and I prefer the cheese on the top of it to be a little burnt to give it a crispy feel, but the way they prepare there’s makes me want to change my mind.  The butter beans had the consistency of lima beans but with a more sweetness.  The butter beans were my favorite part about this dish.  They were smooth, delicate, and sweet which is the perfect combination to have someone a believer of ordering beans with a dish in a restaurant.

The last dish that was ordered were the Chicken Thighs, Cucumber Salad, and Sweet Peas.  The chicken thighs were juicy, seasoned well, and meaty.  My favorite part of the chicken are the breast.  They’re usually meatier and can be cooked so many different ways.  You also don’t have to worry about eating a bone.  The cucumber salad was the highlight of this dish though.  The cucumbers were mixed in with onions and tomatoes tossed in a vinaigrette dressing mixed with a little sugar. This side dish was truly refreshing and if I was thinking straight I should’ve ordered another side of it.  The sweet peas were good as well.  I think they were a little too sweet though and lacked proper seasoning.  There isn’t too many negative things I can say about this dish because it was one of the best simple lunches I’ve had in a while.

Overall, this restaurant is definitely a go to.  The menu prices are reasonable, you have a lot of sides to choose from, and the meat selections are perfect as well.  When you decide to go to this restaurant, let me know how much you love it!
