Misery Loves Co (Winooski, VT)

What the hell is a Winooski, Vermont?  Well, I guess people can say the same thing about any other city or town that they’ve never heard of.  The only city in Vermont that I can name without having a headache is Burlington.  I only know of Burlington because I can name at least one major city in each state.  (Hidden talent?)  During my excursion to the New England area, I made sure that I stopped by Vermont to see what they had to offer.  Unfortunately, Burlington is the place where I didn’t start my food adventure.

Misery Loves Co (Whoever came up with that name is a fucking genius by the way.  Wait, does that mean I’m the miserable one if someone eats with me at this restaurant?  Wow.) is a Rustic-chic hot spot that puts a spin on American food.  I chose this restaurant because it had an intriguing brunch menu and offered some items I’ve never had.  The interior of this restaurant isn’t huge, but definitely fits a rustic look.  It looks as though it seats up to 40 people at once, and even offers a DJ during brunch hours.  (Thank Goodness no DJ was there when I was eating.  I’d rather not listen to anything but Jeezy’s Trap or Die during brunch, please and thanks!)

During my visit I was able to indulge in two dishes.  The Seafood Benedict and the Shrimp and Grits were my two choices during my sit down.  I’ll start the review of the Seafood Benedict.  It consisted of Shrimp, Crab, Scallops, and Halibut topped with a Poached Egg and Hollandaise Sauce.  Talk about a seafood overload!  If you’re a pescatarian than this is the perfect dish for you.  The seafood was cooked perfectly and I would argue with anyone that everything was poached.  Well, at least that’s how it tasted to me.  With each bite that was taken the benedict melted in your mouth.  This was one of the better benedicts I’ve had and trust me I’ve had a lot.  The dish had just the right amount of seasonings and the perfectly cooked egg that sat on top of the seafood.  I would definitely come back to the state just to eat this dish again.

The next dish that was ordered was the Shrimp and Grits.  Ahhh.. Yes.. The Shrimp and Grits.  A traditional dish that only seems imitated by the Shrimp and Grits in New Orleans.  These Shrimp and Grits consisted of Shrimp (Duh), MLC Bacon, and Poached Eggs.  The grits had a bit of inconsistencies with them.  They had small lumps, almost as if the grits needed more cream to even out the texture.  The flavor was a bit “pepperoni” and that might’ve been because of the MLC Bacon.  The overall dish was flooded with Bacon and it over-powered the flavor of the grits.  Grits are supposed to have a nice smooth texture and rich buttery flavor, but these grits were a bit on the tangy side.  Although the shrimp was cooked perfectly, the poached egg sadly was a bit over-cooked.  This dish wasn’t bad, I’m just more cognizant of how Shrimp and Grits should be.  It seems as though ever since I’ve had the Shrimp and Grits in New Orleans, no other has compared.  Every Shrimp and Grits dish has its own flavor and technique but the core should remain the same.

Overall, I’d give this restaurant a shot if you decide to end up in “West Bubble Fuck”, Vermont.  Lol. Kidding.  Although there were some inconsistencies with the Grits I’d still dine at this restaurant if I were in the area.  The Benedict alone was worth the travel.
