“It’s happy hour somewhere!” The perfect excuse to give someone when you decide to drink a whiskey at 9:13 a.m on a Tuesday morning. (Please use your discretion when drinking) Happy Hours aren’t one of those “things” that I’m “hip” with. I’m more of a breakfast, light lunch, and dinner kind of person, I prefer to have actual meals rather than snacks. I’m more frustrated as to why no one has told me about the hidden gems during “Happy Hour” hours.
During my visit to Charleston I chose to stop at The Darling Oyster Bar because they had an amazing item on the menu that was to die for. Yes, I’m being dramatic but I’ve never seen anything like this before. Besides the aphrodisiacs that I ordered (Oysters and Clams), I decided to go for the Bloody Mary. The Captain Bloody Mary consisted of King Crab, Lobster Claw, Pickled Shrimp, Celery, Hushpuppies, and Olives. Talk about a “King’s Drink”. (No Offense to women, I love you, too). This drink is a dream come true. Not only is the Bloody Mary spicy, salty, and flavorful, it’s also helpful if you have a hangover from the night before. Don’t be fooled though, one too many of these will have you lusting for your mate at 2:13 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. The lobster, crab, and shrimp will help fill you up and are great finger foods to go with an awesome drink.
The next items that were ordered were the Oysters and Virginia Clams. I ordered a half dozen of Oysters and a half dozen of Clams. The oysters were “Single Lady” which were meaty, sweet, and juicy. I always inform people to taste the oyster first before you decide to put any condiments on it, because you need to know what you’re eating first. People are quick to put lemon juice on the oyster, but lemon is acidity and will slightly cook the raw oyster. It’s not a big deal, just being politically correct. The clams were pretty good as well. They had the same consistency of the oysters but much smaller of course. People usually eat clams cooked, but I prefer to eat them raw. (FYI, Mussels are black and clams are white)
Overall, if you’re in the Charleston area looking for a quick Happy Hour Bite then this is the place to go. The prices are reasonable and the ambiance is amazing. High Ceilings, Glass Windows, and Tv’s surrounding the bar for your enjoyment. Please note, the Bloody Mary that you see is ONLY offered during brunch on Sunday’s so be cognizant of that. I always like to give the important information at the end, to make sure you’ve read the whole review.
